Job Fairs: 3 Keys to Success

With so many people unemployed or under employed these days, many organizations are sponsoring job fairs to connect job seekers with potential employers. Here are a few tips on working the job fair circuit to make sure you get the most out of the events:

  • Arrive early and pre-register if possible. By beating the crowd, your odds grow of speaking with recruiters who are fresh and able to spend time with you.
  • Research company opportunities in advance. Many job fairs post the companies who will be attending on the internet. These days, many companies are exhibiting at job fairs even though they are not hiring. Standing in line for a company that isn’t hiring at this time is a waste of your time. Visit the Virtual Job Fair (if one exists) on the job fair organizer’s website to see which employers are attending. Visit your target companies’ websites to review posted opportunities, as well as spend time reviewing their latest annual report and other relevant materials. Use this information to target your job search.
  • Develop an elevator pitch. An elevator pitch is a 30 second statement that summarizes your background, qualifications, and career goals. The pitch should be tailored to include the skills that are most relevant to your specific career goals.

Tips for Interviewing with Government Contracting Companies

Young professionalOur staff at Government Support Jobs has literally screened and interviewed hundreds of thousands of job candidates over our careers. While there are volumes of articles about how to successfully interview for a job on the internet, most of the advice has been developed for the commercial marketplace. If you’re serious about landing a job in the government support arena, here are 6 tips that work:

1. Use a chronological resume with enough detail about your experience, education, skills, and certifications.
In all likelihood, the job that you are interviewing for is in support of a government contract. These contracts dictate the minimum qualifications for each job in terms of experience, education, skills, and certifications. Company recruiters are looking for candidates with “X” number of years experience in a certain discipline. So, make it easy for them by listing your experience in chronological order and including the important skills for each position. Better yet, post your profile on Government Support Jobs. Our system automatically collects all the information that government contractors use to identify qualified candidates.

2. Dress conservatively.
By nature, government contractors and government employees are conservative dressers. Always, always, always dress conservatively for interviews with these companies – even for entry level positions. Suits, ties, and modest dresses are always a safe bet.

3. Do your homework.
Interviewers expect you to have done some research, so you need to come prepared. However, understand that you don’t know everything. Don't try to teach your interviewer about his or her business, but do be able to speak intelligently about the company’s mission, core values, and current challenges.

4. Listen carefully and be able to explain what you bring to the table.
Don't just talk about past jobs. Tell the interviewer your story and what you have to offer the company. Explain three major accomplishments, tell how you achieved them, and how they brought value to your previous employer.

5. Let them know that you want the job.
Make sure the interviewer knows that you want the job and will be likely to take it if offered. Ask if there is additional information that you can provide as a follow-up.

6. Don't get fixated on one specific position.
Everyone wants to find a great job but in the current economy you should be pursuing multiple opportunities simultaneously. Don’t come across as desperate. Keep working every angle until you have accepted a job.
