What is a Government Support Job?
The federal government workforce is made up more than 14 million people working as civil servants, military personnel, and government contractors. These personnel work in all kinds of jobs that support the government. Over 76 percent, or 10.5 million, of these workers are employed by government contracting companies, and are commonly called "government contractors." In addition, the federal government buys over $400 billion per year in products and services, purchasing everything from information technology services to building products, and everything in between. Government contracting companies hire personnel to perform virtually every type of job. Examples of positions currently posted on www.governmentsupportjobs.com include opportunities in administrative support, accounting and finance, acquisition and procurement, business development/marketing, engineering, information technology, intelligence analysis and operations, engineering, logistics, social work, health and medicine, and more.

So, how are government contractor jobs different from civil service jobs? First, there are many more government contractor positions available than civil service positions. There are about 10.5 million people currently working as government contractors, compared to only 1.8 million total civil service personnel. Second, the civil service application process is complicated and takes a long time, while government contracting companies can generally hire very quickly. In many cases, government contractors and civil servants perform similar functions. In fact, taking a government contractor job while you apply for a civil service position is a great first step toward starting your government career.

Many people wonder if government contractor jobs are secure. Existing government contracts are re-competed every 4-10 years, depending on the terms of the contract. While it's true that companies sometimes lose contracts as a result of these competitions, frequently the employees will just switch to the new company and keep doing the same job. Right now, government contractor jobs are definitely more secure than many private sector jobs. Here are some examples of contracts that will be generating significant job opportunities in the near future:

Construction of the Joint Satellite Engineering Center, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD
The United States Department of the Army, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has a requirement for construction of the Joint Satellite Engineering Center (JSEC) Facility, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Harford County, MD. This project will design and build a $100 million facility containing information technology labs, administrative space, antenna pads, mechanical room (geothermal), high bays, hardstands, site work, and parking.

    FAA Federal Contract Towers Program
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has a requirement for contractors to furnish the labor, supervision, materials, required equipment, supplies, and services necessary to operate the FAA Contract Towers (FCT). The FCT Program provides air traffic control services at over 225 visual flight rules airports throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and Saipan.

Missile Defense Agency Engineering and Support Services
The Missile Defense Agency intends to consolidate existing legacy efforts, to include contracts and other government agency transactions for and transfer the work to a single program office within Missile Defense Agency, for requirements management and execution. This contract will provide technical and operations support in six primary areas:
    1) Quality, Safety, and Mission Assurance Support
    2) Acquisition Support
    3) Engineering Support
    4) Infrastructure and Deployment Support
    5) Agency Operations Support
    6) Security and Intelligence Support

Clinical Advisory/Technical Services for the Air Force Medical Service
The Air Force Medical Service (AFMS) Clinical Advisory/Technical Services (CATS) contracts serve as a vehicle to provide management and professional support services including advice/opinions, studies, analysis and evaluations. Contractors will provide alternatives and recommendations to improve the AFMS knowledge and expertise in the areas of group practice management, subject matter expertise, health care administration, project management, executive assistance, administrative assistance, policy and engineering and technical services. Policy services include development, management, administration and improving operation of the Legacy Systems.  Engineering and technical services may be required to more effectively maintain and operate AFMS infrastructure including software, hardware and physical infrastructure in, for example, the area of supporting life-cycle management activities on field medical systems. In performing these services, the contractor may be required to provide studies, analysis and/or evaluations in, for example, the area of financial analysis and business process consulting.

Agency Wide Support Services for the Social Security Administration
The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) has a requirement for Agency Wide Support Services for developing application software systems and accomplishing application software initiatives and activities to support SSA's programs and mission. This contract will cover all stages of the application software development life cycle with an emphasis on requirements analysis, design, development, testing and implementation and will support the programmatic and administrative/management information needs of the SSA.
